Zelda

Zelda grew up in Halifax county, surrounded by family and food. Daily she was in the kitchen with her mother, usually making biscuits. After graduating from Halifax County High School and acquiring her Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia State University (VSU) in Industrial Technology she went to work for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA is where she would retire as a Cartographer after 35 years of service.

While working full time at NOAA she attended the Baltimore Culinary College in Baltimore Maryland full time evening program and studied professional cooking. After completing the program she began working with Washington area caterers where she would be assigned regularly to the Speaker of the house, members of congress, vice presidents, and even inaugural luncheons.

Zelda often worked events around the Washington area. She has fond memories of the lunches at the Clinton Residence which turned into a fundraiser later that evening with a big cocktail menu; you would be surprised at how much fun it is to hang out with the secret service in the garage. Zelda was asked to cook dinner for all the living Secretaries of State at Madeleine Albright ‘s Georgetown residence, and she knew she could not overcook the fish...the maid was closely watching.  Zelda was also fortunate to cook for speaker Gingrich at the speaker's office, the steak had to be cooked before the smoke alarms went off in the capital.

All those Washington adventures were great, however, after her thirty plus years in DC, Zelda decided that it was time to move back home. Home is where she could begin to flourish and grow herself, as well as grow microgreens, flowers and hemp. Zelda is passionate about using locally sourced products. She will still cater small events and has joined the team at Hunting Creek Vineyards, offering cooking classes and chef prepared dinners with overnight packages. Words can’t do justice to the food, one needs to experience it for themselves.

Recently Zelda traveled with some of her family and friends to France to Julia Child’s Provence home, eating what Julia would have eaten under her wisteria covered patio. This vacation was exactly what Zelda needed to invigorate her culinary creativity. This year she and her companions will eat and drink their way through the United Kingdom.
